Making Pillows

The following instruction are suitable for a 16" pillow.

1.

Layer the top, batting, and backing.  Quilt.

2.

Measure your quilted block.   Cut the half-yard piece of pillow backing into two pieces measuring 21” x _____ (the size of your quilted block).  For example, if your block measures 17”  square, cut two 21” x 17” pieces.

3.

Fold the two pieces of pillow backing in half so they measure 10-½” from fold to raw edges.

For pillows with bindingPlace the pieces on the back of the quilted block matching raw edges and overlapping the two folds.  Pin.  Baste around the block, ¼” from the raw edges.  Add binding.

Note:    The overlapping folds form the opening for inserting the pillow form.  Do not stitch the opening shut.

For pillows without bindingPlace the pieces on the front of the quilted block matching raw edges and overlapping the two folds.  Pin.  Sew with a stitch length of 15-20 stitches per inch.  Flip right side out and insert pillow form.
